Welcome to our Course Wiki!!!

What is a wiki?

A wiki is a website that allows for digital creating, collaborating, editing, and publishing.  It is likely you are all too familiar with using Wikipedia as a reference resource.  But did you know this online Encyclopedia may be edited by the general web-user population?  That's right--whether you realized it in the past or not, YOU have the ability to add/modify content on Wikipedia's site!

Watch the video below for a clear explanation of wikis.

Why use a wiki for English class?

Using a wiki will allow YOU, the student, to help create our class website!  Users of the site can add videos, upload documents, and post pictures.  For example, you can create study guides that you can load onto this site for classmates to access.  Furthermore, this site allows you to stay informed about upcoming assignments, access class materials, and get linked to helpful resources.  Ultimately, this wiki allows us to work better TOGETHER.

Watch the video below to hear educator's ideas about and opinions of wikis in education.

So, how exactly do I go about navigating this wiki?

Near the top, right hand side of this page you will find a window called "NAVIGATOR."  Inside that window are links to the course pages and materials.  Anytime you want to come back to this main page be sure to select "HOME Page."

To the right middle of the screen you will find the "SIDEBAR" menu.  Included in the sidebar are links to valuable resources for this course in addition to my contact information.

How can I become a member of this wiki?

At the top, right of this page you will find a link that reads, "REQUEST ACCESS."  Click on this button.  A new page will open where you will enter your Sayre email address. In the message box, type your first & last name and the class period you have English.  When finished, hit "send to administrator" so I receive a notice of your request.  When you are approved for access you will receive an email with directions for using the wiki.

How do I log-in?

Each time you want to log-in to edit the course wiki you will select "LOG IN" in the upper, right corner of this site.  You will then enter your appropriate log-in information.

What is digital citizenship?

Think first about what it means to be a citizen.  The word "citizen" connotates a sense of belonging to a place and/or being part of a group.  Thus, digital citizenship refers to being a citizen of the digital space or digital world.  As a user, collaborator, editor, and publisher of this site you are a citizen of this digital classroom--and, ultimately, the world.

After viewing the video, consider the following questions:

1. How has creating, collaborating, editing, and publishing changed over time?

2.  How has this transformation impacted "us"?

3. Are we using the machine or is the machine using us?  What is the difference between the two?

What are my digital citizenship rights and responsibilities?

With citizenship comes rights and responsibilites.  Using the T-chart below, let's specify the contrasting elements of each:

CITIZENSHIP RIGHTS  CITIZENSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

1. To have fun collaborating with peers.

2. To share valuable information with peers.

1.  To keep your login and password private and secure.

2. To keep postings/editings respectful and school appropriate--even when posting/editing from non-school computers.
